What can I draw in just ONE HOUR? – CHALLENGE TIME

This video was inspired by DrawingWiffWaffles, who recently made a video where she challenged herself to see how much she could draw… She filled a spread of her sketchbook and then did a finished illustration. But I’m going to focus on the Illustration part. Impossible? Maybe. But I think if I manage my time right, I can come up with something neat. And thanks to the sponsor of this video You guessed it, Skillshare, I’m going to manage my time right. Skillshare is an online learning community with thousands of classes in art, design, cooking… You name it. Honestly, I jumped into Skillshare thinking there wasn’t going to be much for time management but what the heck there was over 300 classes and I actually fell in love with this adorable productivity class by Doru Catana. In fact, I found myself addicted to watching just to see what cute a looping icon was going to come next. Oh and I mean the tips we’re really good for someone who is doing freelance art like me and needed tips for managing my time. It’s also one of the most affordable learning platforms out there. The premium membership subscription is less than $10 a month giving you unlimited access to high-quality classes from a passionate experts working in their field. The timer starts now. So I was thinking about doing a pose where someone is in a hurry. Oh my gosh, my my references-
I prepared references so I wouldn’t lose time. And I didn’t have them up. So. I thought it would be really fun to do someone that was maybe… running or like in a hurry because… well Because this whole challenge is about –
Wow, I didn’t even get myself to enough room. This whole challenge is about… Running out of space. I’m awkwardly doing this so the timer’s in the way. Oh gosh. Okay. Let’s just… Let’s just calm down. That Skillshare thing- [Siren] Wow, I’m glad that police officer was like
“And *$@()! Kasey’s video I guess.” What was I talking about? Mm. I was talking about drawing someone running because the whole concept of this video is… Being in a hurry and rushing, so I thought it would be fun to draw someone… running.
So that’s what- That’s quite a booty. So that’s fun.
There’s a person running. The cool thing about this pen is that it needs time to dry. Jokes on me, I’m doing a fast challenge. So that’s- The thumb is on the wrong… side. I’m smearing the ink all over the place because there is… no time to let it dry. I was actually thinking more of drawing a male character. I actually thought it would be cool if maybe something was grabbing him for some reason. So like a little hand? That would be kind of cute. I think people’s hands are usually pretty stiff when they run.
Is that true? Oh man, he could be naked ’cause his leg is covering up… his uh… You know. Oh my god, I could totally make him naked ’cause everything’s covered up but I shouldn’t make him naked, should I? That would be-
Whew, that would be inappropriate. Now I should probably not spend too much time of sketching- How can you even see the timer? I shouldn’t do too much sketching but I do need to come up with a cute outfit for this guy. What if he was wearing a crop top? Bring crop tops for men back, Y’all. What’s he late for? You know, wait, you know we have to give him Chuck- You know, we have to give him just like some chucks. That’s just my-
My shoe of choice. Every time. I like this guy. Okay, we wont to spend too much time because I’m gonna do this in full color. We gotta zoom in. Hold on. Let’s zoom in really quickly. And I can’t see anything. Quick quick get the timer in screen. Actually is this too small a piece of paper? I feel like I’m gonna run out of room Panic panic. Now he’s zoomed in too much. Oh no we’re wasting too much time on stupid things that don’t matter. All right guy, I’m rooting for you to run away from whatever’s gonna be happening. I’m not really sure what’s happening behind you, but I’m rooting for you. But you can make it. And you’re running. You’re just like “Heh Heh Heh” Let’s look at this hand. That’s a strange hand. I feel like he’s holding something. Also wouldn’t be one of my hands without drawing it huge. You know, he’s gonna have some muscle.
He’s gonna wear a crop top he’s gotta have muscle. His hands are a little Barbie like but these are times of urgency. I don’t have time to perfect my hand. So we’re just gonna have to roll with it. I mean who am I kidding, my hands always are a little goofy looking. One day I will be able to draw hands in no time. That is not now. We have got to… Oh God, we got to hurry. He looks like he’s doing some sort of like silly dance. Maybe that hand should be more like fisted so it’s not so goofy looking huh? Wait, I want him to be a little thicker. You know, he’s supposed to be a little muscular and not super thin. Get those calves in there. You all know how I feel about calves these days. For some reason super into exaggerating them. What do you guys think he’s late for?
Let me know in the comments. I think… Maybe he’s got a daughter and he’s late for her recital. So he is hauling butt. To go see her recital. He’s like
“No! I told her I would see the recital.” I really wanted to do long hair So I gave him very long long long dreadlocks. Well, not yet, but I will be. Oh my God, what is that- What are those shorts?
They’re kind of silly looking. There was like… a rectangle. Okay, um oh Gosh, almost half the time is gone already. Let’s lighten up the pencil so we can ink it. Okay. Let’s… Use a thicker line Just ’cause I feel like that might make things a little easier. So I’m sure this challenge is going to be much easier for someone, like, to do, than Waffles.
Because my style is… much more simple and you know when it comes to adding details I don’t really do a whole lot of that. So I felt like this would be a really easy challenge for me, but I mean, come on, that’s kind of cocky, right? I don’t think it was easy but I feel like maybe if anything there’s just more pressure for me to do good because it’s like “Well your style is so simple…” “You better do good.” So I do feel a little scared that if I don’t do really well it’s like “Wow…” “What did you spend an hour doing Kasey?” Wow Sometimes I really enjoy my simple style and how when I add muscle it’s like that really funny way to add muscle by just doing the line… And some more lines. I think it’s silly. recently, I was at a convention and they were doing this thing called a sketch battle where us three artists, we drew a prompt and we only had I don’t know like 30 minutes to do it. We did a few rounds and every time I was like, “Oh my God, I have to hurry.” So I would do a very quick drawing and it would be very crappy and fast and simple and I’d be like, “Okay, I’m done!” But then there would still be like five minutes left and I was just like, “Oh my gosh.” “I rushed this because I thought I had no time left.” Thinking that like that’s 30 minutes or whatever was going to go by way faster than I thought it was and… It didn’t.
I had so much more time. And so I sat there with a really crappy piece of art when I could have put so many more details into it, So… It was both funny and sad for me. So I’m afraid that I’m going to end up doing the same thing but… I guess that’s just the nature of a challenge like this, huh? Okay, I want to give him some leg hair. I am always giving girls leg hair, let’s give guys leg hair too. Now you guys can’t call me gross for giving someone leg hair ’cause it’s a guy. Whoo. Oh gosh, I just look at the time we are… exactly… halfway through with the time and I’m feeling pretty confident. So… I don’t know. I think I- I think I can do it. I did bring my hair dryer in here ’cause I just knew for sure that watercolor drying wasn’t going to be the most forgiving thing to me. Okay. Oh, I kind of like it so far. Though I only have 26 minutes so I should probably think about… I don’t know.
Hurrying? I said he was running to his daughter’s dance recital, but I don’t know why I made little creatures run after him. Oh, I should give one a face. Oh boy. Kasey you need a color. I guess some of these little guys are hands and some of them are little guys. I decided to draw one maybe like cutting him off up here. It just seems so empty down here, but then like really full in the corner down there So… I decided to have him being cut off. He has a dance recital to go to.
He does not have time to save the world right now. Okay, this is… Interesting, I guess. We need to get rid of the pencil work so we can start coloring it. We have 20 minutes to color. And yeah. You gotta get on that. Okay, exactly 20 minutes. Oh, no, where’s my fingle? I got my fingle. Don’t worry you guys. Okay. Thankfully I already have like skin tones mixed up. ‘Cause I mix too much and then… I have them already. Go away pens we need watercolor now. Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay. We have… 19 minutes and 23 seconds. I guess I’m not even going to tape it down because I feel like… I don’t have time. I feel like the last third of the time is just going to fly by. Oh gosh. Why do I keep getting cat hair in my paint? No! So a point waffles made in her video was She wanted to show that you don’t have to set a time large chunks in your day to do art.
You can do a lot in just one hour. You could do so many one minute or 30 second studies in an hour. You don’t have to do a full illustration but just setting I think aside 30 minutes every day just to do figure studies or something… would be really nice.
Which like honestly… oof, I need to do. Don’t forget that little mid-drift. Yeah. Okay. Now I did, like I said, brought my hairdryer ’cause… Oh water color. [Hairdryer] I want to give him a red head hair tie just match… the shoes. I was actually thinking about making his hair slightly black slightly red. I think I might do slightly black slightly purple. That might be kind of cool hair color. Because I’m rushing I’m… going outside the lines a few more times then I’d like to. No big deal, but y’know I’m not trying to go outside the lines. I talked about going outside the lines and I just started doing it like… absolute crazy. Let’s just try not to screw it up too bad here. We’ve got about 10 minutes left. Things could go south really quick here. oh, my that was way more purple than I thought it was gonna be but I was like “Well, I shouldn’t be too picky about my colors because I feel like if I keep getting picky that I’m never going to get it done.” Okay, no big deal.
But like also there’s only nine minutes left Kasey. So, I would think about… I don’t know. Maybe you should panic at this point. I’ve gotten really quiet ’cause I’m like, you know time is, uh, Time is something. I wonder how if I would have been worse at this if I didn’t- I feel like YouTube probably helps me… draw faster a little bit? I mean, I’m not the fastest, but I can also talk and draw at the same time now. That’s pretty cool Okay, okay.
You know, it’s fine. It’s fine. We’re doing… Great. I feel like my style is too simple. This was not much of a challenge. Less than a minute left. I feel like I’ve got everything. Didn’t leave out a torso, did I? Is an entire arm missing or anything? I don’t think so. We need-
We need like a… 30-minute challenge. I think an hour might be too much. Especially for my simple style Um… I guess that’s it? Oop. Well, here you go. Did I leave anything major out? You guys will let me know the comments, right? Oh boy. Not only was it really fun just seeing how much I could draw in an hour, but I guess it kind of gives you guys an idea of how long it takes me to do something like this. My style is very simple so I can definitely do a background illustration in like two hours or something. And a simple character in just one from start to finish. Thank you so much for watching. If you haven’t already be sure to check out DrawingWiffWaffles’ original video idea and sign up for two month free trial with Skillshare. Oh, and I’m trying this one out. “Stay golden.” Bye. To cheesy? [Music]
