Hello there, and welcome to another episode of “Chloe tries and fails to use new art supplies that she’s never seen before!” Should be good. Now if you watch other YouTube artists, you more than likely have seen these markers before. I have seen many different YouTube artists use these, um, and I’ve never actually watched any of their videos because I look at the thumbnails and think they look like they wouldn’t work. So I thought, I’m not gonna watch them, I’m gonna try them for myself to figure out how they work… and that’s about it. I’m gonna be using the purpley-green ones today in my drawing that I do and I’m actually gonna be giving these ones away, so if you want to find out how to do that then make sure you keep watching. Now before we begin, I’d just like to quickly mention that Audible is kindly sponsoring this video today and this is a collaboration that I’ve been so excited about for such a long time, because maybe it’s just me. I don’t know, but when I’m drawing I don’t like total silence. I have to be listening to something, otherwise it’s just too like… nothing. Sometimes I listen to music but then after a while I get kind of bored of it. I love listening to audiobooks when I draw purely because it’s a way for me to both draw and kind of get through a book and listen at the same time. I love to do both and sometimes it’s like “do I draw or do I read, which do I do?” But with audible books, you can actually listen and draw at the same time. So if you would like to get your first audiobook for free when you try Audible for 30 days, you could go to or text “chloerose” to 500-500, and get your free audiobook that way. By the way, if you do I highly recommend. This is one of my favorite books of all time, it’s called Big Magic and it’s basically an incredible book to listen to whilst you draw because it talks about inspiration, learning to harness your ideas and kind of just get an understanding of creativity. Also, make sure to check out Audible originals as well because they have a bunch of original titles on there from famous storytellers around the world with journalism, theater and yeah, that’s everything. Let’s try out these markers and hope for the best. I finally have the Chameleon markers. And I’m so excited that I finally got them because I have wanted to try these for quite a long time now and I’ve seen a few YouTubers try these out recently and I was like, you know, I’m not a marker artist in any means, nor do I really plan on being a marker artist anytime soon. But, you know as an artist I think it’s about time that I tried them out for you on video. I ended up getting- they’ve got like several different sets of them, I ended up getting the skintone color ones, and I ended up getting the cool tone uh, markers as well. I’m not sure how many colors they do. I’m guessing they do quite a lot; I thought it would also be time that I officially use my marker paper by Canson. I got this during Black Friday, it was very cheap. And again, I’ve never used this so I don’t know what to expect. Open, there we go. I wasn’t sure which colors to go for but I thought these looked quite nice. Ohh, here we go. Ah, they feel so fancy! So is it like two markers then, is that how it works? I mean, I’m really confused. So we’ve got one end… Oh, okay. So this is- this is purple. Oh, there’s two ends! That’s neat. So one’s kind of more of like a brush nipped end. So we just do this, so I’m guessing this marker right here. Oh… okay, how does this work? What do I actually do with these? Okay, so they’re kind of like Lego for artists. *Woman instructing in video* (Woman): And insert into the mixing chamber. That’s what I did! Okay, hold it vertically. That’s probably why it’s not working. Okay, so we’re fusing at the moment. Apparently we’re fusing and it’s supposed to be vertical. Does it look like it’s doing anything? It doesn’t look like it’s doing anything. I’m- I don’t know what’s happening right now. It kind of looks lighter, I guess, a lighter purple. So let’s see what it does. *Gasps in amazement* Oh my gosh, it worked! I’m waiting for the purple to return, I think I put it on for too long. Oh, here we go! These kind of- remind me of something I used to have as a kid, to be honest. Still going, still going! So piece- there’s a lot of pieces that confuse me. Here we go. So touch them ah… wrong, wrong nib. Oops. Sorry nib, not you. Can you see how the colors changed? Like the graduation of color, look- look at that! That is so cool. I will say that this is kind of weird, like I wouldn’t it- it’s a cool gradient, but I wouldn’t say that they blend that well, like I mean, you can’t really compare them to, like a Copic marker in that way. You can kind of see this so it’s not like a stereotypical Copic marker, but it’s still fun. Always love a good blue gradient. Ohhhh, I love this one. So it’s good. It doesn’t seep through the paper on to the next page, so I’m not sure if that’s the marker or the paper. Probably the paper, but still, that looks really cool. I’ve decided that I’m gonna give these away over on my Twitter. So basically I’m gonna put a Tweet, say hey if you want to win these, retweet this Tweet. Yeah, so follow me over on there, retweet my Tweet and you can be entered to win these Chameleon markers, I often do giveaways on my Instagram by the way. So make sure you follow me there as well and I’m gonna be doing a big 300k giveaway. I think that I am going to draw something cute and cartoony with some flowers maybe, so maybe we’re gonna draw, maybe a bear. So I’ve started to sketch out a little bear here, and I’m gonna have to kind of do the line art last, so for now I’m just gonna focus on the little bear here. If this turns out okay, I might put him for sale. So if I just like, give him a big bottom. He’s kind of lying in the grass or something. *Holiday music* I think I’m gonna make him purple because I feel like making a little purple, Purple Percy is gonna be his name. Great, I’ve got black. There, excellent. *Music* It looks like a blob, I can’t get his face right damn it! Okay, so I’ve kind of got it now. He’s not perfect but he’s as good as I’m gonna get. Yeah actually know what, maybe I’ll do the sky. I’ll do like a lovely sky around him. Let’s try that. Not sure how you get on when you’re doing a big area though, because I feel like it would be difficult, you gotta work quite quickly before it gets like, darker and more faded. Here comes the blue! So it doesn’t work too well when you’re trying to do quite a biggish area, like I’m trying to do the sky and it’s not working too well, unless maybe I need to just work quicker than what I’m working. They’re really nice markers though, like the quality of them is really good. I love bears so much. I almost wish that you could have them as pets, but I think you know, that they’re cute to cuddle when they’re little but then they’d like, grow up and then eat you, so maybe that’s not the best idea. *laughs* *Music* I think they don’t really blend that well together. I think they work best when you’re just using that one color on its own. But we’re gonna keep trying to see what happens. *Dreamy music* Okay, so that’ll do. That’ll do for now, let’s try the green. *Music* So I’m gonna have a little purple uh, bear. I’m not sure if this is the best means of approaching this to be honest because I feel like it’s not gonna blend too well, but we’ll see what happens and if it doesn’t work at least I tried. It’s a little bit of a pain that you have to keep like, activating it. I’m using this, um – what is this? Random… um, ink thing that I got on a Scrawlr box for October. Have no idea what it actually is, but um, yeah. This is what I’m using to get some of the like, finer details and I’m gonna go over there a little bit, too. But I like it because it’s the kind of- you see how it helped, I can get a like, little flick. It looks really nice, I’ll try and find out what the name of it is and then put a link in the description if you want to check it out yourself. *Relaxing music* Okay, let’s risk his little face. I’m so scared to ruin it. I’m so scared to ruin it. I mean he’s very patchy, which I kind of in a way expected to be honest. It’s super splotchy because obviously this blending with this, it’s just not really happening. I am gonna fix that with my ink pen thing, whatever you call this, in a minute, but uh, yeah. That’s pretty much the plan. I don’t know what I’m doing. I really don’t have a clue, absolutely no idea, but I’m trying. I am trying people, I’m trying. *Music* He’s a very strange-looking bear, very very strange-looking bear but I’m sure he’s okay with that. *Music* Okay, I’m going to go ahead and use my… brush pen thing and then try and just give him a bit of a, a little bit of a boost because he’s struggling at the moment and I want to make him better. *Music* So this is what he looks like! Um, I’ve never really made anything like this before, so I’m kind of, I really quite like it. It’s a bit different for something that I’ve- that I’ve made and I love these markers. Like I feel like you couldn’t get this kind of gradient with any other marker, so I really appreciate that about it and I would love to hear if any of you have tried these Chameleon markers as well or if maybe since seeing this video you would try them out yourself or maybe you’re gonna get some for Christmas, who knows but uh yeah, I liked them. He’s a little bit messy. He’s not perfect. This – where’s it gone? – this thing. This is by Pentel. Yes. It’s a Pentel. Okay, it’s a Pentel thing, really really nice. I like this, made a bit of a mess but whatever. He’s gonna be for sale up on my website if you would like to buy him for yourself. Ah, he’s- I’m gonna call him Percy. I like him, Purple Percy is going to be his name. So thank you so much to Audible for sponsoring this video today, again make sure you check them out and in the link down below. So yes, that’s everything today. Thank you so incredibly much for watching! I hope that you enjoyed the video, let me know what your thoughts are on this piece and if I should do more pieces like this in the future, and yes, thank you so incredibly much for watching. I hope you enjoyed the video, take care of yourselves and I will see in the next video. *Music*

  • Plum Fun says:

As a fanatical Chameleon abuser (ok…that sounds….never mind…), here are a couple tips.

NOTE: I've only had my set (all of them…including all of the ink refills…and multiples of some…and multiples of all the tips…and the Colour Tops…ok, just say "everything Chameleon makes for the markers")…what was I saying? Oh yeah…I've only had them for about a month and a bit, so….yeah.

Tip #1: LIGHT TOUCH! This is the biggest mistake I see artists trying to use these. Just barely touch the paper. Pretend someone dared you to slide a razor-blade across your lips. That's about how light, maybe a bit more. If you are hearing the marker "sound"…you're pushing too hard.

Tip #2: You want a sharp, high-angle (I try and shoot between 70-degrees to no more than 45-degrees). Basically, the "tip" of the brush is where the ink flows from…not the edge/side. That's why you are seeing a lot of streaks (and you were pushing too hard).

Tip #3: PAPER MATERS! Like, a LOT! I had some marker paper…sucks. I tried good quality bristol board…better, but not great. I tried high-grade cardstock…ok. I then splurged and got some X-Press It "blending card" (I think Jazza uses it almost exclusively)…made a HUGE difference! I also tried Bee branded 'Bee Artist Marker Paper' after one of the Chameleon reps I was chatting with said it't what the artists there like to use. Very nice paper! Definitely a tie if not better than the X-Press blending card (and cheaper!).

Tip #4: S-L-O-O-O-O-W movements. Like you're diffusing a bomb. You can speed up once you get a handle on the light-touch and angle use of the pens. But even then, slow movements seem to work better than the quick 'back-and-forth-jitter' that most marker users employ. Making the marks slightly 'oval' and overlaping a bit seems to be the best…but I'm still trying to get the timing and length right.

Tip #4: Don't be afraid to use other alcohol-markers with it. I use the full range of Dick Blick Brush Pens and find that the colours compliment very well, and even blend nicely when needed to 'smooth out' some area.

All in all…as if you couldnt' tell…I'm a huge fan of the markers! They FORCED me to slow down on my artwork. This is helping me improve as well as having a sort of 'zen' effect on the process. Before I was always trying to 'rush things through' to get to the next colour, or next blend, or whatever. My art was suffering from it and I was feeling stressed at the end of drawing…like I should have had more done and it should look a lot better. Forcing me to slow down, with the whole "cap, cap, attach, count 1…2…3…4…5…6…7…recap…draw" thing to get consistent blends, really relaxed me. I found myself enjoying the process of creating more than the end result.

BONUS TIP!: Always, always count consistently! Counting to 5, using…and then having to produce the same 'blend duration' absolutely requires this.

    Have fun!

  • Kaylee Jackson says:

I recently got those markers and there are amazing almost because I experienced what happened to you when it didn’t blend totally perfect. What you have to do with that is just make sure that you slightly push the nib of the marker so it is perfectly straight for blending

  • Walboro says:

I’ve got the full set of Chameleon markers, they are BEAUTIFUL. I agree they’re not great for larger areas of colour but they are easily my go-to markers (yes, even over Copics, fight me) they blend easiest on bristol board and the larger sets come with a colourless blender so all’s well. I have been watching your vids for AGES and just today noticed I’m not subscribed. Fixed that little error.
