Tutorial: How to Use Regular Crayola Markers to Write Modern Brush Calligraphy

Hi everyone, so today I wanted to show how
you can use regular Crayola broad tip markers, just the normal kind that you probably already
have from your childhood, to make some really pretty calligraphy letters and words. Brush pen calligraphy using either paint brushes
or these flexible brush tip markers is really popular right now and it’s because you can
get some really pretty lettering using these. So for example, this is the Tombow dual brush
pen and it has a flexible tip on one end so you can get some really pretty line variation
using these. They’re a lot of fun. But they can also be really expensive. This particular
pen can cost anywhere from $3 to $4 depending on where you get it so it’s definitely a big
investment for just one color. And of course, one color is never enough. Whereas you probably have these lying around
at home, or if you don’t, you can probably get a whole pack for the same price as just
one of those Tombow pens. So I really recommend just giving it a go using these current markers
that you probably already have because you can actually get some really good results
out of them. So I’m just going to show you how you can do that. In calligraphy, one of the main things that
we kind of do is on our upstrokes of our letters, you want to press really lightly and get a
thin stroke. So that’s kind of normal. But on your downstrokes, you’re going to really
try and focus on getting a thick stroke, so you’re kind of putting more pressure. Using
this pen, even though this broad tip or chisel tip is not flexible, you can put the entire
tip of it down on the page and pull down and get a really thick stroke. So that’s what we’re going to do. Put the
whole tip against the page and pull down. So again on the upstroke, you get this really
nice, thin line. And on the downstroke, you can get a thick stroke, and that’s what you’re
really aiming for with these letters. So, for example, the letter ‘n’. Upstroke
thin, and then go thick on this downstroke. And then kind of repeat it, so thin and then
thick. That’s my little ‘n’. That’s pretty much it. I mean, it’s not going
to be necessarily easy right away but you really have to kind of focus on finding a
way to hold the pen so that you’re able to apply that light pressure and then the heavy
pressure on your downstrokes. So I’ll just go ahead and write some words
out using the different colors, and you guys can watch. As far as finding how to write letters, there
are some really traditional styles out there. But as long as you’re kind of slow and deliberate,
you can make some really pretty letters using really just the cursive you learned as a kid.
I’m writing in my super slow calligraphy speed here, and that’s really something you should
try and do in the beginning so that you can properly form those letters. It’s not trying
to write super fast, you’re trying to write slow and make really pretty shapes, consistent
shapes. Here’s a popular calligraphy word. This word,
‘minimum,’ is kind of a popular practice word because there are lots of similar shapes in
it so you can really use it to practice your consistency. It’s also really easy to get
lost where you are in the word. It’s really easy to forget to dot your ‘i’s’ in the right
places. ‘Minimum.’ But I think I got it. Again, my upstrokes I’m writing really lightly
with a thin line, and then I’m trying to focus on putting that whole tip against the page
when I’m going on my downstrokes. That’s kind of ugly, but that happens. You’ll see that I kind of stop between every
different stroke of the word and that’s what helps me form really deliberately shaped letters.
And it’s not perfect, but you definitely with practice can pick up the different shapes
and the different things you want to do. Alright, so that’s pretty much it. Hope you
guys find this useful and helpful, and even if you do have the really nice, expensive
brush tip markers, like I do, I still find this a lot of fun because you don’t really
have to worry about using up all the ink or damaging the tip because these are super cheap,
so whatever. So try this out, it’s a lot of fun, you can kind of keep these in your bag,
not worry about them, jot things down when you have time. And hope you enjoy it. Let me know if you guys have any questions
or if I can help with anything. Bye.
