Tutorial: How to create tileable brick texture mask in Adobe Photoshop for use in Pixologic ZBrush


Hello and welcome to another quick
tutorial. My name is Alex and this tutorial I’m going to try to
explain to you how you can create a mask in Photoshop to quickly create
something like this in ZBrush. It is a tileable texture that we’re going to create. This is a base for further sculpting. In Photoshop create a new file. 1024 x 1024 Under View / Show /Grid turned on and Snap turned on and under Snap / Grid turned on. and step 2 great to go and under Edit / Preferences / Grid,Guides & Slices set 256 pixels It should look like this. Select Ellipse tool, Fill white Stroke black 4 points Click near the center doesn’t have to be exact because we turned on Snap to Grid and it’s going to
snap to center. Check “From center” 1024 x 1024 press Enter Ctrl + J to duplicate the Layer, Ctrl + T to use Transform tool. Repeat a couple of times. Create a new layer, select all
the newly created layers by pressing Shift and press Ctrl + E
on the keyboard to merge them together. Go back to Ellipse tool again click near the center and again 1024 by 1024 Filter / Other / Offset It’s going to ask you if you want
Rasterize the shape because it cannot offset it in this format
that its currently in. So just press OK and make sure you have Set to transparent turned on Set 0 under horizontal and under vertical 512, press OK Ctrl + J to duplicate Layer and again under Filter / Other / Offset set -256 vertical and 512 horizontal line and make sure you have Wrap Around turned on press OK. Select all the newly created layers and Ctrl + E to merge them together. Press E on the keyboard to select Erase tool and then just erase black
lines that we don’t need. Turn Off Background Layer erase all the white colour outside the main shape. Magic wand tool and make sure you have Contiguous turned
on Select and Delete the whites. Ctrl + D to deselect everything. Press C on the keyboard go to Crop tool start outside of the canvas and then just drag down and outside of the canvas let go of the mouse and press Enter This was we deleted areas that we not in the canvas. New Layer Brush make sure you have black colour selected 4 pixel size for border and hardness 100 % Draw lines that will represent the edges of bricks. To create straight line click the starting point then hold Shift and click on the end point. Press E on the keyboard for Erase tool
again erase parts as shown Base is created, select both layers by holding Shift Ctrl + E to merge them together. Ctrl + J to duplicate it. Filter / Other / Offset 512 horizontal -256 vertical and Wrap Around turned on. Duplicate original layer Ctrl + J Filter / Other / Offset 0 horizontal, 512 vertical Duplicate first layer, Ctrl + J Filter / Other / Offset 512 horizontal, 256 vertical Select top most layer, and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E to merge all visible layers in new layer. Turn off grid under View Fix any holes that may appear. To check seamless of the texture go to Filter / Other / Offset and offset it in the value of half of the canvas size ( 512 x 512 ) Press Ctrl + F to redo the last command as you can see we have seamless texture mask created.
