Tutorial – Creating a Spray Can from another Galaxy – Illustration in Adobe Illustrator CC

Well, let’s get inspiration Open your fridge and catch anything from there There are always inspiration there close the fridge door, of course, so as not to waste energy, let’s test it let’s see if it is working Apparently it is working It worked so this spray can will be our reference I’m gonna use my hand holding the spray can I’m drawing considering my view perspective Let’s create an axis being the center of the spray can Then a circle being the up part Straight lines… Always respecting the axis angle I’m holding the spray can and drawing at the same time but you can pretty much take a picture Or even find some image from the internet I made a circle here because it is rounded here. So instead of drawing an arc I think drawing a circle makes it easier to reach a good result Good! We have here a little metal piece It is good to divide your draw in the middle so you know what to draw in both sides So we have the cap Draw the cap Divide here, because the up side is kind of a half of circle Always try to imagine the things as 3D Don’t concern about the sketch because the sketch could be improved later in vectorization step We shouldn’t spend a lot of time on sketches Let’s draw my hand index finger tip here Always respecting your view perspective Don’t create a new perspective so your draw could be weird Of course it is not that perfect, but the closer to reality the better your illustration will get Ok, there is a little bone over here Thumb over here Hands… Hehe Who never had a problem drawing hands, huh? but it’s all about training You really have to train Wow, hard to draw with only one hand, huh? Maybe thicker here Good, let’s draw the others fingers Always find where your fingers are on the object. And make it similar, or at least close to similar to the reference Proportion is a good thing to consider, but small details don’t matter in this step Now I want to close the draw and start thinking of how we can use the criativity We can maybe imagine this spray can as transparent for example Sketches are only orientation and structure of your things Don’t be afraid to miss the sketch, you can draw things overlaying the others Let’s imagine this spray can as 3D Considering the gravity, the liquid inside would be straight, the can is inclined, but the liquid remains straight This liquid could be a spacial liquid Where we can find a lot of planets inside A constellation maybe e can create a straw in the middle and pretend it is squeezing and dropping more planets, what do you think? I think anything that comes into your mind is valid to consider because there is no rule for creativity You sould use your creativity the way you want, the way you feel comfortable There is no law to be followed about creativity I think there is no limits to creativity even more so when you’re the creator of your own theme not even being the theme creator, you can use your creativity to surprise a potential client Making something that your client have never seen Sketching here… almost done I think is getting good enough Maybe the thumb is too small but there is no problem We can fix it in vectorizing step Can you understand what is “don’t spend a lot of time on details?” Let’s put a hole here my hand cut off, what do you think? and melting here, a liquid coming down and also being projected on the ground More melting, finger melting Look, there is not much beauty on that This is just a structure to draw on later More planets here, let’s make a galaxy around this hand… It’s gonna be very crazy I think it is good the way it is, I’m gonna take a picture And paste it on Adobe Illustrator I will collect my materials My paper, pencil and stuff and put my digital stuff Keyboard for shortcuts, pen pressure tablet, mouse for sure And Let’s go Well, I’ll open a new document in illustrator Name it as intergalactic spray can, 800×600, rgb, 72 ppi, and create Okay, let’s paste the draft Draft pasted Let’s name the draft layer as “Sketch” Because it is gonna be the base to create our drawing I’m gonna select all the elements from this layer by clicking this little circle decrease the opacity so that we don’t get confused when making the trace Lock this layer Create a new layer, named Spray Can Layer created, now we are going to… We will draw the spray can exclusively in this layer Well our layer settings is ok Now we’re going to configure the blob brush I don’t use Paint Brush but I use Blob Brush Select it, double click And make some definitions Unselect “Keep selected” and “Merge Only with Selection” Set the “Fidelity” as “Accurate” Size 2, Pressure style, Variation 2 You don’t need to configure “Angle”and “Roundness”. OK Now we’re going to create a preset for this brush. Go to “New Brush” if you don’t see this window, Go to Windows>Brushes Let’s create the brush preset, Go to “New brush”, select Calligraphy, click Ok And here we’re going to put the same value that we put when we clicked twice in the brush icon, ok? Angle 0, Rotation 100%, Size 2, Pressure Style, Variation 2 as well. OK. Done. Our brush is ready to trace I’m gonna select black color here One thing that I use oftenly is Guide Lines So I will draw this line so that it is very straight. I made this line here, I made this one here, because it will be the sides of the can, will give us an orientation to make a straight line. I select these two and click Make Guides. I make these lines just guides, because then you can’t select it and it’s no longer part of our object. Back to the blob brush (SHIFT+ B), select the brush we just created, and let’s start tracing. Well, the style of thin, thick, thin, thick will depend a lot on the pressure you are putting on the pen and tablet. So if you press lightly, it will come out thin, if you squeeze more, it will come out thick, so it respects the pressure of your pen. Then I always stay here always following the guide line so that it is straight and not crooked. CTRL + Z always on, to undo what we just did CTRL Z, is a matter of trial and error. I will trace thin, thick, thin thick, ok, here is fine. Not so much. SHIFT + E is the eraser shortcut, if you want to erase a specific part, SHIFT + E, and erase it. SHIFT + B to return to the blob brush. End here, ok. Now on the other side. This is a technique that seems difficult but is a matter of practice. If you have never done this, maybe you will find it difficult, just like everything else in your life. If you don’t know something and try to do it, it won’t come out perfect at the first moment. But with persistence you can achieve what you want. I’ll close our can here, its base, cool. Close the top, cool. Then I’ll make that metal next to the CAP. Let’s draw, cool. Now I will make the circular part of it. Your stroke does not have to come out perfectly on top of the draft, because the draft is just the orientation. You can also invent some things as you create them, whatever you find necessary. Little can, little cap, little hole, cool. Our spray can is almost done, so if you want to hide the guides you can go to View>Guides>Hide Guides (CTRL +;) Almost done Let’s create the liquid inside I will draw one more guide line in parallel from which we made, so that it is true to the direction of the can. Put inside, because the liquid is inside, here too. Let me change color so I can differentiate one thing from another. Creating another guide, not actually guides for now, they are shapes. Maybe the base looks something like this. Right? Decreases a little so that it looks cool. I will create the guide again by selecting the guidelines, right clicking and Make Guides. Well, they became guiding elements. It is all about orientation And I start to trace the liquid part now. Thin, thick, thin, thick, ok. Almost closing Close here Good The other side now Thin and thick, Thin and thick, Thin and thick, well, our liquid comes up until here, it doesn’t go until the end Let’s close with the liquid surface Done Ok, CTRL + ; to hide the guides it already looks like it has a liquid inside and it is transparent right? Good! Let’s do the straw part now, let me see, I think I’ll create another layer for it. When you feel the need to create a new layer considering organization, do so. I’ll block the layer, create a new one and name it as straw. One more guide for the straw Let see if it is in parallel Let’s increase the stroke size in order to be similar to a straw I will expand the object so that it is no longer a stroke but a shape and transform it into a guide line Let’s trace the straw, thick and thin, thick and thin. The straw must end over here, cool. One part is done, let’s make the down part of the straw Always respecting the guide line orientation thick and thin, thick and thin, it is just a matter of practice Ok, let’s close the straw Cool, our spray can is almost done. Let’s start coloring now, put a color base now. I usually color layer by layer. I disable the straw, select this layer. Create a larger shape than the object I drew, it came black but I want white. Right click and send it to back Select all the elements I want colored, click Divide in Path finder, if you don’t see that, go to Window>Path Finder. It will cut all the elements you have selected after clicking here. Then the colors will be here inside. Let’s do the same with the straw. Lock the layer or disable it. Create a new shape bigger than the object I want to color, throw it back, select all, click divide and delete the elements I don’t want. It’s getting pretty cool It is time to create the planets Let’s create a new layer, called “Planets” Let me see where they are And I’m going to create guide lines in order to be our orientation One planet here Another there… decrease a little bit One more… Maybe another one Good! Let’s transform the circles into guide lines Now I’m gonna start to trace out our planets Back to blob brush and line out the planets the way they should be Thick and thin, thick and thin… Closing… Done! The same for the others… You can pretty much copy, paste and decrease their size in order to save time But I will be doing the thing in the guts Almost done One more here It is getting cool I’m gonna copy and paste this other one We’re going to make the color base of the planets. Bigger white shape, send it to back, select the elements that we want color, click divide, select the elements we don’t want and delete Now I think it is time to make our hand Our hand will be overlaying all of our elements. So let’s create a new layer for the hand We can select all these layers, and decrease their oppacity Because they have colors and make it difficult to see our sketch Lock everything, go to the Hand’s layer And star trancing Remember that I mentioned the thumb was too small and we would fix in this step.. Let’s do it Again, sketches are only skeletons they can give you the idea where to put the elements And you can use your creativity whenever you want. If you feel the need to add something in your illustration, don’t hesitate just do it Because it is hard to say which step we need to use the creativity Because creativity may come to your mind at an unexpected moment If you feel the need to add something in your illustration, to improve something, just do it Don’t get stucked to the draft index finger here Great We’re creating partially the hand we’re not drawing the entire hand so we’re leaving the hand’s trace very close to the spray can Let’s go to the middle finder Thick and thin, thick and thin… Cool, now the ring finger Great, now the little finger that appears very little Let’s make the nails Thumb nail… Guys, Hand is a hard thing to draw, huh ?! I always had difficulty But we must practice it I think we would have other nail here Another here One more here Let’s draw the hand’s hole Almost there… yeah Let me increase this thumbnail size Let’s color the hand now Yeah, let’s color the hand So here we have our hand Let’s create a bigger shape over here the shape is behind all the other drawings that we are going to color Select everything, click Divide, delete the elements we don’t want paint the hole black Let’s return our layers to their original settings. We decreased their oppacity, now we back to Oppacity 100% That’s cool What we should do now? I think we can start adding shadows… hard shadows Let’s start from our spray can We’re going to create a new layer for this shadows And now we star tracing the shadow we have to imagine the direction the light is coming from So I imagine the light comes from the right So in this side (opposite) , we have the shadows this is a physically logical thing, if you take an object in your house and apply a light to it, the other side will have a shadow So that’s it So we start lining out the shadows One tip to make the shadows inside our draw We select the object Foget about… let’s do it this way Now we’re going to use the Paint Brush And trace the shadows the way you feel cool Closing here Cool There we have another shadow Let’s add a little more There is one tip to make the shadows inside our draw that I enjoy to make I select the shape that I want shadow, go to Object>Path>Offset path And it will make a shape inside the shape that we’ve selected Black color it is like a fill with a small light fileting, I will erase this part because right side comes light and the other shadow I think that could be a little different here.. Closing it… Let’s erease a little bit to have more light it’s a matter of adjustment, ok? you can go erasing and tracing as you feel the need We’re going to make the same thing here, but decreasing the Offset path Paint black Keep in mind that is Blob Brush and not Paint Brush Look that! It is getting pretty cool! Enabling the straw makes it better The straw is a bit strange our shadow actually went to another layer by mistake it should be in a separate layer, or not, you do it the way you want but I like to separate everything because of organization… this shadow could be coming from up here what I just did here that I copied and pasted I just changed the layer shadow, selected them all and put it somewhere else so it is always good to lock the layer so that this kind of problem doesn’t happen I think we should add a hand shadow projected on the can If you double click the element you make it as in isolation mode. So you can edit only that object So we add the shadow I imagine it goes something like this Great!I think it is getting cool Now we can start lining out the planet shadows I will be enabling only the planets layer Let’s use that same technique I select the shape that I want shadow, go to Object>Path>Offset path . We will be creating a shadow inside Erease a little bit… Let me see one thing… I had already made another drawing, but I’m redoing because the video of this first came out bad! I think this shadow is not needed It is wrong here too Well, straw shadows… Select it, create an offset path, erease a little bi of the shadow because it is very in the middle erease, erease… we’re going to use only these shapes Very good, guys! Now hand’s shadow Ouch! I forgot to separate the shadow from the straw and planets in other layers, but no problem. I’ll even do that I will select all the shadows of the separate layer and put here in the same layer and delete the other. But if you want to keep them separate, you can leave, it’s even better to get organized Now hand’s shadow There is another tip for making shadows We select the shape we want the shadow, select the Knife tool Start cutting off according to the way we think is good Select what we cut, CTRL + C, CTRL + Z until it gets the original form, CTRL + SHIFT + V to paste exactly where we cut from we can fine tune this thumb a bit. make some wrinkles on the hand, it gets better Whenever you see an opportunity to improve something, you should do Sounds like a hard thing, but it’s all about training again, if you don’t start doing something, you’ll never get it, it’s all up to you, you’re at point A and you want to get to point B, for you to do that, It will only depend on you. Maybe this wrinkle is not so cool, but no problem Let’s use that offsetpath technique. And I’ll cut the shadow where I want it, where I think it should be. It’s getting cool, guys! It’s getting cool! Thank you so much for appreciating what I do, this is very important to me, besides my passion for drawing, you are giving these kinds of feedbacks in the videos, you are motivating me, are making my day much better. so nothing better than giving back such content. so you adjust when you feel it, shadow doesn’t have much secret, it’s a matter of trial and error, there is no law of creativity, it can come anytime, if you think something will look good in your drawing, try bro! Not afraid of making a mistake I think it’s fine. I think we can do it now, I think there’s a shadow here in the spray can on the paint actually. The shadow goes something like this. Whenever you do something in the spray can, go to the spray can layer and do the same for your hands. We can improve the smoke, I didn’t like it that way. I will create a new layer and name it “Sketch Smoke” and we can make a new sketch on top of the one we already have. I will even do different color to differentiate. ATTENTION: GUYS, I DIDN’T IMAGINE THAT THE SUBTITLES TAKE ME A LOT OF TIME. IT’S BEEN 12 HOURS I’M WORKING ON IT AND I NEED A BREAK HEHE. BUT YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE WITH THIS.
