Major Snapshot: Painting

Painting in particular – I think offers
that sort of infinite freedom. It’s so open and holds the potential for any
ambition. The most I love about painting is that any particular narrative, any
particular person or something you want to capture you want to portrait in like
the most obscene extraordinary or whichever way you choose that you can do that –
that with painting. The most rewarding thing for me is simply to witness
somebody taking off.Sometimes the information that one has to talk about
is technical, but mostly it’s about strategies for inventing and widening
the range of what one does. The combination of the professor’s and the
peers and how it’s set up. You have your own space and you’re able to create a
body of work and just really work on what you’re doing.
Freedom of creativity is incredibly important in this department, and they
definitely allow you to expand not only just to a 2d medium but also 3d as well.
Painting is not confined to just painting. You do what you need to express
the kind of concept or idea that you want to communicate. You’re not limited
to just paint and canvas. You can do just about anything you want. This department
has actually great studio space, which a lot of schools do not. That’s an
important part of the whole formula. I toured a lot of schools in New York
and everybody was elbow to elbow, which isn’t good for artists who needs space. The one thing
about painting for ten hours a day is you can get really lonely. Being able to
paint with a community around and all your friends. It keeps you really happy.
We interact with our studio mates. There’s a great like a communication
going in between – also the great feedback we get every end of the semester. They
bring like one to two artists from around the world to come and critique
your work. I think it’s very important because you don’t get to have that in
the outside world. For me MassArt is perfect. The painting program is perfect because
I have the freedom to just try to excel in my own way and challenge myself in
the crazy direction that I want to go into. Painting is great. It is why I came here
and it’s why I’m still here.
