Let’s Make an Oil Painting Without Picking Up a Brush

– You see this painting behind me? This is a replica Van
Gogh, and it’s not a print. It’s actually, if you look, it’s painted on here, by an artist. I wanted to figure out where paintings like this come from, and I
found this video from the BBC. – [Interpreter] I first came to Da-fin in 1918, there was a huge order for —, and I needed
cheap rent and labor. 20 painters came with
me, many were unemployed and needed the money. – There are studios in China that create art as, like, in a factory. – [Interpreter] We produce 360,000 oil paintings in just 1 1/2 months. – But, you don’t have to go to China to buy one of these paintings. The contact info for these
companies is on Alibaba. So, what I’m gonna do in
this video is create art. Instead of going after
just a Van Gogh clone, I wanna see what these
Chinese artists will create with just a little bit of producing. Let’s make a painting. Here we are on Alibaba, so let’s
search custom oil painting. Custom size and design
oil painting from $1. Custom handmade classical oil painting. One piece minimum order form Shenzhen. Let’s look at a few of these. So, they have a video. (clattering and whirring) Looks like they got a lot
of oil paintings, here, but they are customization
on over 20 pieces, so this isn’t exactly what we want. One to four pieces, $176,
custom famous painting. They’ll sketch it, we have the
middle here, it’s finished. If you look at this, behind me, I’ve always been a big
fan of the Impressionists. I love Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, back here, I don’t know if he actually counts as an Impressionist, but I like the abstract art, so I
would rather have that than something like this,
so, let’s keep looking. – [Narrator] Eager Painting,
established in 2005, located in Shenzhen
City, is a professional manufacturer, engaged in oil
painting and canvas prints. – I like these guys, let’s
figure out what they charge. Lin, Pers, address,
telephone, view details here. We gotta create an account. Please slide to verify. Hey Lin, I respect your art style and would love to do business together. I’m looking to buy four
paintings of the following types. One 24 by 36 oil painting
in the style of Monet. One 24 by 36 oil painting
in the style of Van Gogh. One 12 x 20 oil painting
in the style of Picasso. One eight by 12 paper sketch
in the style of Picasso. Examples and images are in this folder. I would like your artists
to sign the paintings with their signatures, thanks, Alex. I’ll report back when Lin gets back. I feel like such a professional. Look at this lighting set up. I’ve got these two things,
I’ve got the camera, and it is zoomed in so far, and then we’re showing the entire room, we’ve got the lamps on and everything. I’m gonna move that tripod. It’s gonna be sick. It’s Monday, at eight
AM, and I’m in Las Vegas. I just heard back from Lin and his team, the painting guys, and
it’s only $70 a painting. That means we’re looking
at a total cost of $309, with shipping, and it’s high
quality hand made artwork, $70, plus Alibaba will cover the quality. So, basically, if the quality
of these painting sucks, I can return them within 90 days and get all the money back. It’s a no-brainer, let’s
get some Chinese paintings! Paintings have arrived,
let’s see what we got. So, they came rolled up in this tube. I’m still gonna have to get ’em canvassed. This is the first one. I mean, it looks pretty good, and I love this emperor’s face, this is so dangerous, I gotta cut this tape
without cutting the canvas. I gotta be so careful. Okay, big reveal, these
are the two landscapes. Okay, again, I mean, it
seems pretty high quality. I wish there was a little bit more height to them, in terms of like, maybe I’m gonna ask for knife painting or something next time, they’re
definitely hand painted. Here’s the other one, this one’s better. I like that it’s got actual height, here, if you look, you can see
these are actually painted on. You can see the people
are just little dots. I love the artistic style
of that, it’s signed. I’m gonna go get these framed, and we’re gonna be good to go. Maybe not framed, I’m just
gonna get ’em mounted on canvas. Here’s the pricing sheet
from Allan Jeffries gallery. For these three, it’s gonna be $250, and I’m gonna skip the eight by 12, which my calculator says,
that’s $530 for these paintings. Hopefully we can sell
one to make up the price, and it really is just, it’s gotta be one. One sells, and let’s say
we sell it for $1,000, that’s this entire experiment, it’s over. Now, we’re waiting to
get the canvases back, and soon, this entire room will be filled with glorious Chinese paintings. I’ll keep you updated as we go. I already ordered another batch. I’m giving them feedback. I’m trying to create higher quality art so that we can eventually sell it, using cold email, to get into galleries. So, as that project continues,
I’ll keep you posted on it. If you want the actual
proposal that we use at Lorelia to close
video production deals, you can get that for free at
experiment27.com/proposal. If you found this video valuable, I’d love if you would
share it with a friend, like, and subscribe to the channel. Thanks for watching, I’m Alex Berman.
