Hyperpigmentation | What I Use & Tips | Dark Spots | Age Spots

welcome back to my channel. this is
Gadgetlily. today I am going to talk about hyperpigmentation and this is
probably one of the most popular skincare concerns I get from your
comments and questions. so yet one reason why I haven’t made a video on this
sooner is because I don’t have a magic product for you.
I know everyone wants me to say here it is this will work for all
hyperpigmentation and that it will work overnight. but I don’t have such product
what I decided to do actually is to share with you about my own
experience, about my thoughts on hyperpigmentation, what I have learned
and what I have tried and also what might work if you use it diligently over
a long period of time. I always want to be honest and informative and also
encourage my viewers to do their own research so if you are still interested
then keep on watching. I want to start out by saying that I am not a skincare
specialist and I am not an esthetician. this is just me sharing my own opinion
and experience everything I know about this topic. I am going to share in this
video so I won’t be making any individual recommendations in the
comment section. so I hope you watch the video in full hyperpigmentation is
actually my own personal skincare challenge. I am 60 years old as many of
you already know I have been very fortunate
due to my diligence skincare and just very simple lifestyle. I
don’t have issues with wrinkles or enlarged pores. I have normal skin that
is neither dry nor oily. so one thing due to lack of sun protection in my younger
days I do have sun spots or age spots and that are surfacing on my skin. I was
never a sun worshiper so that might have helped in a way to not have more than
what I have. so I think a lot of the sun damage was also due to being working in
the garden and also from running. although we talk about hyperpigmentation
on the skin as one topic, one big topic. I believe that not all hyperpigmentation
is the same and so we should not treat all as the same. so I think the first
thing in trying to figure out how to deal with the hyperpigmentation is to
understand what’s the cause of your hyperpigmentation and from there to find
a way to to find what will help. some darkness are actually damaged that is
done in the deeper level of your skin so they are really stubborn and hard to to
deal with. while some are more on the surface. so for example there’s one
time in my late 30s to early 40s I had melasma. and I personally think it was
due to reaction to a certain medication and excessive sun exposure at the same
time that caused my melasma because it just happened
overnight while I was on that medication. so I developed big patches of redness and
literally overnight and I had them for several years they were they stayed on
my skin for quite a long time and it sort of gradually disappeared on their
own. and over time from my own research some melasma are form by hormone
imbalance. it could be due to pregnancy or life changes and also various other
reasons. so again it’s important to know what is causing your hyperpigmentation.
as for sun damaged spots I personally think some of mine are formed deep in the
dermis and eventually they rise up to the top forming these brown spots. I used
to have long commutes in cars and buses so I have sun damage on the sides of my
my face I wasn’t good about putting any sunscreen on back in those days. so I
think or I contribute that to why I have sun damage on the sides of my face. also
I never wore sunglasses and I was always afraid I would lose my glasses anyway so
I never wore sunglasses and that’s why I developed sun damage now around my eyes.
and even when I started wearing sunscreen I probably had neglected to
put around my eyes so that’s why there’s darkness and so it’s another thing to
remember. always don’t forget to apply sunscreen around your eyes. but I noticed
from looking at some of my older videos and pictures.
I noticed that some spots actually are kind of surface and then they
disappeared and it could be due to some of the products that I was using and
eventually it kind of faded them. but yet there are some that no matter what I put
on them they remain and like this one has been with me for a long long time.
over the years I’ve tried many products several products and I think the hardest
part about recommending skincare products is that it’s really hard to say
which product worked because the way our skin is structured. nothing works
overnight or you know a lot of them don’t work very quickly. so it’s really
hard to identify which product was the one that actually was able to fade
the spot or not. there might be other Youtubers out there that are
willing to say a certain product works but I I can’t do it. I
personally find it very difficult to identify exactly which product is the
one that worked. I have an idea but it’s not I can’t be so so definite. but
also please keep in mind that although I’ve tried a lot of products I haven’t
tried them all. I haven’t tried all the products claiming that you know it works
for hyperpigmentation in fading spots. actually I’ve tried a very small
percentage of what’s out there. so please don’t feel hopeless just because I don’t
have a miracle recommendation for you. so I’m going to now talk about my own
personal feelings about how I want to deal with my hyperpigmentation. I
personally don’t feel hopeless the reason why I don’t feel hopeless is
because I know there are probably skin care procedures out there probably in a
esthetician’s office or a dermatologist office that might be able to
help. but I don’t plan on using those methods at this time or maybe never.
I personally don’t dwell on these spots on my face. I always believe that
anti-aging is something I don’t want to obsess about. even though I have a
YouTube channel that talks about skin care and even though I was a beauty
product consultant before. I just don’t want to obsess about skincare. Beauty is
fleeting I always believe that and trying to hold back time can be a
exercise that is all-consuming. if you allow it to be. and that’s not how I
want to spend my time so that’s also one reason as a side note, why I don’t color
my hair. I know there are viewers that have recommended that I color my hair because
I want to be at my age right now. so part of skincare is to me is about enjoying
the process, doing the best you can, and about acceptance. so I I know they’re
probably procedures out there that would help me but it’s just not
something right now I’m too concerned about. but maybe if you don’t find it any
skincare product it’s something for my viewers to think about because we
all look at skincare individually and it means different, something different to
all of us .and we can’t really talk about hyperpigmentation without mentioning sun
protection and wearing sunscreen religiously because even if we are able
to get rid of some of the sun damage or darkness or spots from you
know from using a certain product, new ones can return. new ones can form so
it’s always important to protect yourself against from having new ones
develop and that’s really important. I just want to get this out of the way
because I am sure some of you will mention it in the comments about
hydroquinone. and I’m gonna talk briefly about my own feelings on that. I
personally don’t use it and I don’t think I ever will. I also think that if
anyone who is interested in using hydroquinone should use it under a
dermatologist care or some skin specialist supervision. and it’s an
ingredient that should not be used for an extended period of time. and for my
international viewers it’s actually an ingredient that is banned in many
countries. I encourage my viewers to read up on hydroquinone before its use and
again that’s just my personal choice after having done quite a lot of reading
on it. out of all the products that I’ve tried PCA is probably the most effective
PCA Pigment Gel and this one is hydroquinone free. and this is made by
PCA Skin. it can be quite irritating and I only use it as a spot treatment. I
don’t put it all over my face only tap it on to the area that is affected with
this. the darkness or sunspots. I also want to mention one thing though, is
that even if the product works I think it requires and it’s probably common
with all the products I am going to talk about.
it’s important for continuous use and maintenance. I think that any product
dealing with hyperpigmentation when you stop using it some of the darkness will
return. hyperpigmentation is a stubborn it’s stubborn. it’s a stubborn
skincare issue so I think dealing with hyperpigmentation takes a continuous
effort. even if it’s effective a it does require regular application and I’ve
seen some result. and this is the PCA Pigment Gel without hydroquinone. it
has another formula that actually has hydroquinone. so the effective
ingredients in this is – it has azelaic acid. it also has kojic acid and lactic
acid and some other fruit extracts. and so I use this like I said as a spot
treatment. you do feel a little bit of irritation when you first start using it.
I would use this morning or night you can apply this morning or night. during
the day you definitely have to go heavy on your sun protection. and at night, I
would moisturize after use. you apply it and just let it absorb but let it dry
but let it dry and then do your regular then do your regular skin care. I want to mention and I think
it’s an important point is that whenever you are using any kind of treatment,
either if you’re using a serum to target a particular skin issue or like I said or using a spot treatment. you want to make sure your skin is well
exfoliated. and if you have a lot of dead skin that’s sitting on your top of your
skin, it’s really hard for any of these effective ingredients to work or
penetrate. or a lot of it will be wasted because it’s just kind of sitting on top
of dead skin. this I mentioned in my exfoliation
gentle exfoliation video and I want to mention it here again. because some of
these products are not cheap. and so if you are just you know you probably
could be wasting these treatments. use a gentle exfoliant and this one is the one
I enjoy. before I came on to make this video I did an exfoliation. and I really I
just love the way the skin feels afterwards. yeah, make sure your skin is
well exfoliated before you use any kind of treatment. For those that are
interested in trying something more natural I would suggest you use or look
into rosehip seed oil. and that is another oil that is known for helping
with hyperpigmentation. this is the thing about skincare, if I
did not use these products, would my hyperpigmentation be worse. you know
that’s the question I can’t answer. I know that I have this stubborn stubborn.
some of these spots that are not going away. but my other question is if I
did not use these products, would it have been worse. would these have been darker?
so that’s that concept about opportunity costs that I mentioned in my skincare
philosophy video. it’s like you just never know. I don’t want to make any
claims but because I really don’t know. but if I didn’t use it could it
have could it be helping me but I’m just not aware that it’s helping me. so anyway,
so in the world of more natural ingredients,
rosehip seed oil is known to or many people claim that this is helpful in
fading hyperpigmentation or also helping. my own reason is I don’t really
know but I do use it because of you know makes my skin feels really nice. Niacinamide
is one of my favorite ingredients in skin care and this one I really enjoy is
Niacinamide Brightening Toner. this is made by Good Molecules.
I like Good Molecules because it’s just, it spells out exactly how you use it and
what’s in it. the ingredients are very simple they don’t put any more than what
what you need in a particular skincare product. and this one actually has
Arbutin which is also known for brightening your skin. has vitamin C and
Niacinamide which is type of vitamin B3. Niacinamide is known for uneven skin
tone and so this might help. I don’t think this can work to target any really
stubborn spots but it does help in evening out your skin tone and also a
plus is that it’s also known for minimizing pores. so this is a
good product to use a brightening toner. and you basically just take a cotton and
just put a little bit and run it all over after you wash your face. and then
go on with either your treatment or skincare. so I’m going to continue to use it
I’ve used quite a bit of it and I do feel like maybe it did help me. I also
received the niacinamide serum and this is 10% niacinamide. you know when i tell
you about these ingredients i don’t necessarily want you to go and run
out and get Good Molecules niacinamide serum. what i am trying to say is maybe
look into Niacinamide as an ingredient to see if that
will work with the hyperpigmentation that you are dealing with. maybe it’s
uneven skin tone that you’re dealing with. that you’re interested in trying to make
it more even. so again just look at the ingredient is what I’m trying to focus
on. licorice root is another natural ingredient that is known for dealing
with hyperpigmentation and it’s found in a lot of skincare products for
brightening and also for spot treatments. so I think that is another ingredient
that maybe you want to look into or look for products that actually has that
particular ingredient. licorice root is actually one of the
ingredients in this toner for brightening.
another product in my arsenal that I am using to deal with hyperpigmentation is
of course Tretinoin. it’s known to speed up skin cell turnover and
hopefully, that will also help with hyperpigmentation and to lessen the
darkness. I did a video on my day and nighttime skincare routine. I want to add
that and I forgot to mention it in my video in the summer months I will actually
take a break from using Tretinoin. just of course to give my skin a
break because it is a very active ingredient. and also because of the
possible sun exposure even though with using sunscreen.
maybe resume end of September so I think it’s a healthy way of using Tretinoin
is to give your skin a little break. and during those months I’ll probably use
something like a retinol product instead. so I hope you find this video helpful on
this very complex topic of hyperpigmentation. and like I said, it’s
my personal skincare challenge as well. I hope that what I share with you today,
some of the points that I made will help you deal with your hyperpigmentation
challenge. so thank you for watching and I will see you in my next video bye
