How To Use Markers

Hi! I’ve had these Ecoline brush markers for
a while and never really knew what to do with them. I know Ecoline in little bottles – as a kid
I used them a lot, using a brush to color my drawings, or using a dip pen to write with, or do calligraphy. I never really knew how to use the brush markers, until I saw Carlos Aponte’s work. He uses these juicy markers very often, and
the way they make lines have a slight gradation from
dark to light, works really well with his style. Carlos teaches at Sketchbook Skool, and you
can watch him use these markers in Klass at Sketchbookskool.com. I’ll be practicing doing a self portrait
using these markers. Go get a mirror so you can do a selfie too! Because of the fat line of the marker I want to just focus on shape and not on detail. I’ll start with the shape of my face, then
add the neck. It seems appropriate to draw my hair too,
so it kind of becomes the frame for the facial features. With the tip of the brush, I can create thinner
lines, for definition in the hair. The eyebrows are below my bags, the nostrils
are about at the same height as the ear lobes, and studying my face in the mirror, I can
see that the mouth is somewhat half way between the tip of my nose and my chin. Now let’s put those eyes in place even though it’s a bit scary I try to mimic the almond shape of my eyes and i do see a few sagging wrinkly bits but I’ll be nice and just add a few tiny
lines. I’ll pick another color to combine, and
add a fun background texture. With the side of the brush you can make fat
lines, and the more you hold the pe upwards, the thinner the line gets. Now I feel like the face needs a little extra
too, so I’ll add just a bit of green – but not too much, I don’t want to overwork it This was fun! Grab a pen, marker, brush markers, paint…
or whatever you have at hand and draw a self portrait. Share what you make on social media using
the hashtag #dttinaction. Because I’d love to see what you make Also, make sure to sign up for a weekly newsletter
