How to Paint Terra-Cotta Pots

Here’s how to use paint to turn the basic
terracotta pot into a colorful accent for your home or yard. Here’s what you’ll need:
a terracotta pot and saucer, large rubber bands, a small artist’s paint brush, all-surface
primer, acrylic craft paint, aluminum foil, masking tape, spray shellac, and an X-Acto
knife. Stretch the rubber band around the pot angling it so the final result will look
like you dipped the pot on a tilt. Paint the pot below the rubber band with primer. Do
the same with the saucer. Let them both dry completely. Now paint the pot below the rubber
band with acrylic craft paint. You may need 2 or 3 coats of paint to get a bright saturated
color. Do the same with the saucer. Let them dry completely between coats. Wrap the top
unpainted portion of the pot in aluminum foil. Use masking tape to cover any gaps and to
seal the foil to the rubber band. Apply 2 to 3 coats of spray shellac. Do the same with
the saucer and let them dry. Scour the paint along the edge of the rubber band to loosen
it. Cut the rubber band and carefully peel it off. Now your pretty pot is ready to add
color to your home or yard.
