How to Make an Artistic Food Tray : How to Apply a Clear Coat onto a Food Tray

DAVID CLEMEN: Hi, I’m David Clemen on behalf
of Expert Village. And today, we are going to paint a wooden food tray. All right, welcome
back. Now, we have finished our food tray and it’s painted and we love it and we’re
ready to put cheese and crackers on it or fruit or whatever. The final step in this
is, well, you have to let the paint dry. Once the paint is dry, then you want to go to a
hardware store and get you a polyurethane spray on clear coat. For ventilation reasons
in my lungs, I’m not going to do it in here. But basically what you want to do is get the
can of spray paint and I’ll just simulate. If this was the can, you just want to kind
of–when you spray it you want to make smooth motions. You don’t want to hold the can at
any one particular spot, but you do want to kind of go methodically across the tray. So
I’ll just simulate the sound and you can kind of get the idea. Tshhhhh! Tshhhhh! Tshhhhh!
So you want to make you passes really smooth. And then in these crevices, you want to turn
the can and get down in there. Tshhhhh! Tshhhhh! So basically, you’ll get down into these corners
so when you have to wash it, you want to make sure that you get everything, especially on
the inside, but you want to get the sides and the back as well, so when you–after you
use the tray, you will probably want to wash it. So you’re going to want to get this–a
nice coat on there and then let that dry, and you want to do it outside in a well-ventilated
area because that stuff is strong. And then after you get the second coat, you’re going
to want at least do a second coat and then a third coat, and then that way, you’ll be
able to use it for years and years. And that’s the final step of painting and making a painted
wood tray.
