HIGHLY VISUAL Color Change – Paint Brush Change TUTORIAL

(upbeat music) – What’s up guys, and welcome
back to Tutorial Monday, or Magic Monday, or
welcome to this tutorial. I still have yet to figure
out a name for this thing. I think I’ll just go with
Magic Monday or something. It sounds so cheese though, doesn’t it? Today I’m gonna bring you something that I’ve been doing for
a long time actually. This is a color change. Originally it was the paintbrush change, which was done like this, and then people started
playing around with it and it was done this way. Alex Pandrea has some great work on it with I think he calls
it the Mona Lisa change, where it changes and then changes back. If you’re not familiar with that, you should definitely go
check out his work on it. It’s incredible. But I’m gonna give you
just basically my handling on this sort of paintbrush change. It’s not exactly a
paintbrush change anymore, but it’s a visual color change, and I use this all the time, actually. This is my go to color
change when performing. It’s kind of like a double take, like, “Huh, huh? What, huh?” And people seem to really like it, so if you can nail it, it
should not make a sound and it should very, very visual, so we will definitely cover
all the bases on that. I also wanna take a second just before we jump into the tutorial, please. Today marks the first day
of Mental Awareness Week in the United States. I just wanna have a quick word with all my subscribers and viewers. I have a platform, so
I feel the need to talk about things that are important sometimes, because or else I’m
just wasting this space, and although magic is important
to me and important to you, there are some underlying
things that are more important, one of which is in the magic community, there has been a lot of
suicide, and you know, it just comes with being alone, spending time with your cards and stuff, and maybe things aren’t going
your way or that type of thing and I just wanna tell all you
guys, reach out to somebody. Reach out to somebody if
you’re having problems, if you feel sad or depressed, or if you’re not feeling sad or depressed, just call a friend that you
haven’t talked to in a while and just hit ’em up, be like, “Hey man, just hope
everything’s all right, and just letting you
know I’m here for you.” I’ve struggled with
depression in the past. You know, just putting myself out there. I’ve had problems with depression, and it’s, for those of you who
have been through depression know that it’s not something
you can just turn on and off. It takes a lot of time
and conscious effort to get out of depression, and then you might fall back into it, but knowing that and
knowing what depression is helped me sort of navigate through it, and with the help of friends
and family of course, so I just wanted to have
a quick word with you guys and let you know that, you know, there is support in the magic community. YouTube and the internet can
be a mean place sometimes, so just reach out somebody
if you’re feeling down. That’s it. All right, back into the tutorial. Right now we’re gonna learn
the modified paintbrush change. I’m gonna give you guys
all the work on it, everything that I’ve been doing with it, so I hope you enjoy. Don’t forget to hit the like button. If you already have, thank you very much, and if you haven’t, just,
it should be down here. Should be right there. So anyways, this is the
last video I’m posting before I leave to Italy. Super excited, and I’ll keep
you guys posted on that, but for now, let’s get
straight into the paintbrush, the praintbrush change. By the way, I’m using the
Red Wheels playing cards. I’ve already talked about these in my top five favorite cards. Just thought I’d mention it again. I’ll leave a link below if
you’re interested in buying them. So sexy. The way they feel, how sexy. Prerequisites for this,
there aren’t very many, but there is one, which
is the double lift. Yes, the DL, the double turnover, however you like to call it. The double lift that I choose to use on a normal basis is the master push off. I learned that from Andi Gladwin, so you can go and check
him out if you like. In the action of simply
just pushing off a card, so it looks like I’m pushing off one when I’m actually pushing off two cards. If you want, another
really good double lift is the Stuart Gordon Double. You’re gonna have to get
your finger strength up here. Xavier Spade has a really good tutorial on this on Magic Stream, but if not, I’m sure you can browse the internet. It really just takes like,
finger strength and patience, so once you get that double, you wanna hold a break there, okay? So you hold a break. This hand’s gonna come in. You’re gonna grab those two cards, okay, and the way that I do this is, I’ll put my ring finger
down here in the corner, my thumb up here and
these two fingers here, and as I turn over, my thumb is gonna glide
towards my ring finger, and that keeps the cards squared up in the action of turning them over, so as I’m here, I’m keeping pressure. It should look like you’re
jut turning over one card. You know, that’s what it should look like if you’re turning over one card, and a double lift should look like that. So, a quick tip for the double lift is that any time you’re gonna do a double, it should look exactly like
what it would look like if you were turning over one card. So, once you have that double lift, so you can use a push off or whatever, push off is good but
you do have to readjust. You’ll have to pinch the cards up here. Try not to make them split. You’re gonna pinch up here
with minimal hand movement, and it’s gonna come over here, and you’re gonna sort of
just, this is what I do. This is my little subtlety. I hold it here with the middle
finger just on that corner. Just kind of keep it there, and don’t move around too
much ’cause it’ll break. So if you use a Stuart
Gordon, this is lot easier ’cause you get right into
it and you’re right there. Once again, we’ll do it from this side. I’m gonna do the Stuart
Gordon, and then this corner underneath your middle finger
is held just there, okay? It’s gonna take some practice
for that not to split, but there’s a little subtlety that I do which helps it out a lot, so once I’m here and I hold it here, my thumb immediately goes here, okay? So I’m covering this whole line. This whole line is now
covered with my thumb so that if it does break
off to the side like this, the thumb will cover it, so it gives it a little bit more cover. That’s a nice little subtlety
that I like to use with that. To make the change happen. Oh, my German friend. Yeah, hello Chris, I would like to do the Squarespace sponsorship video. Oh man, yeah, sorry guys. boom, you pinch it there. You can show it if you’re confident. Your thumb comes over here. I like to create and sort of mentally condition their mind for this movement. So just once or twice,
and you’re holding it here and you’re not moving
this hand whatsoever. Your hand is like a rock right now, and you’re just gonna
slide it up and down, and when you’re ready to make the move, these cards go underneath, okay? You’re going to split a little bit, just enough for you to do that, okay? So once you’re here, you come in, split, and then what you’re gonna do
after you’ve done this motion is split it up and then
move the card forward. My buddy Xavier Spade has
a nice little subtlety where you move the card upwards and it kind of like, makes
this card flip over fast, so you’re here, he likes to go boom, move it upwards, and then back. I prefer the nice little visual eye candy that you get when you nail it perfectly, so when you’re here. There is a little tiny sound, but it shouldn’t be a big sound. Should be just barely any sound at all. Pressure on the side of the
deck when I decide to do that will automatically flip
that card there, okay? So it’s always very
important that they think this is one card ’cause that’s
how the illusion is created. The deck sort of rests
on these cards here, all right, sort of rests there. I’m not even holding it really. I’m just kind of like, letting the weight of the deck push down a little
bit, and then you’re here. So that was in slow motion. We’ll do that again. Hold it here for a second. Grab the top. Your thumb covers all of that. There are different types of double lifts. I won’t go into too many different types. I might do a video on that in the future, but one of the double
lifts that I started doing was a strike double. I don’t know if this a strike
double or whatever it’s called but you would come in with your index between your pinky and ring finger, and straight, bam, I would
grab two cards, right? So no break, nothing. I would come in here, grab
two cards, turn them over, and that was how I got into that. I stopped doing that because
it’s a little bit weird ’cause you’re like, “Eh, okay.” So, maybe in performance
I’ll use that sometimes, but for the most part, this
one here, just so nice. So again, boom. Pinch the top corner here. Your thumb covers everything. These fingers here are going to grip it underneath that corner, and you wanna make sure again
that the card doesn’t split. You’re holding it very still, so you can just show that as one. Come in, one, two, three. It changes from the 10 of
clubs to the 10 of spades, the worst change ever. If you wanna use this in a
routine, it’s very simple. All you have to do is control the cards at the top by any means necessary. Let’s say they look at
the nine of hearts, right? I lose it into the deck. I can do now a double
undercut as I’m talking and say, “I believe your card
is on the top of the deck,” and they go, “No,” and then you go, “Okay, well, how about now?” – Oh my god. – So all you have to do is,
they have a card selected. They look at it. Lose it somewhere in the deck, and then abracadabra, it jumps to the top. Oh wait, that’s not your card, really? How about now? Is that your card? It is? Good. Okay, did my job. So that’s it. All right guys, thank you
so much for tuning in. I hope you enjoyed that, and thank you for sitting through the
Squarespace ad as well. I hope, I try to make it, you know, as entertaining as possible for you guys to sit through so you’re
not skipping through. One more quick little note
about the paintbrush change. Do practice it obviously. Practice your double lift. Whatever double lift
you’re comfortable with, just practice it and make sure it’s really imperceptible to people, and if you’re struggling
with it, you know, learn something a little more advanced and start learning that and
start playing around with it, because once you get comfortable with it, you’ll be really happy with yourself and really proud of yourself, so just really put the effort in before you go and upload it online. That’s really important,
and that’s all I got to say. So guys, thanks so much
for tuning it, Ram Fam. Everybody’s been
commenting like, “Ram Fam,” so I’m just running with it. I don’t like it, but
I’m gonna run with it, ’cause you guys keep saying it. Don’t forget to subscribe if
you’re not already subbed, and we’ll see you on the next video. All right guys, peace. (upbeat music)
