Fun art – how to use gel pens on canvas

And welcome back now I don’t know about
you, but I’m always looking for ways to ‘1’ speed up my artistic output, ‘2’ learn
new techniques and ‘3’ have some fun so I’ve been experimenting with gel pens
because I really like vibrant colors but I want to have vibrant colors on canvas
where I can add my bead and mixed-media to the canvas, but I also like to have it
without all the paraphernalia of all paints and brushes and so forth.
So here’s what I found. I purchased some gel pens and this is from Cassart, they
are Jelly Roll Sakura pens, pigmented pens, and it says here
light fast and won’t fade, so that’s really what you’re after. Lots of lovely
colors, there’s glitter, there’s shiny and there’s fluorescent in here in this box.
So the next thing was to try this out on various surfaces. So I did it on
some various papers, so some Cartridge World canvas paper, some WH Smiths
acrylic paper it all comes out very, very lovely, and
then I tried it on some canvas and that’s where I started to run into
trouble, once I was onto the canvas because it simply wouldn’t dry. In fact
leaving it a long, long, long, long, long time, it still wouldn’t dry, and so it
would wipe off with your fingers, so it was not successful. So eventually I found
a solution to using these pens on canvas. We painted some QOR watercolor ground
onto the canvas, in two different directions and then I went to work on
the canvas with the pens and if I get this one from over here,
and here we go, welcome to the Bodgets! So there’s my beadwork to attach to that,
and the Bodgets, this is the ‘Bodgets on the beach’ and they kind of represent
society in some way. So the pens adhered and dried out relatively quickly, and we
used a gouache, we tested out some gouache from Caran D’Ache – in the foreground.
So there’s quite a bit of experimentation going on there.
However in order to fix the pens, particularly the glitter pens, we then
used a Liquitex professional satin varnish, two coats of that, two thin coats
of that, and certainly the glitter eventually did dry up and stabilize and
settle underneath all that. So now all I need to do, is to attach my cloud with
its lightning bolt above the Bodgets on the beach. So see
you at the same time, same place
