Hello, it’s prompt number 140. If you’re drinking your coffee this morning go ahead and leave a coffee emoji in the comments.
☕ You know who you are. YUM. Alright, let’s see what today’s prompt or prompts prompts? are going to be. We have “Sushi” and “Briarpatch.” All right. Let’s see how we’re going to combine these two words. Let’s get into it. This was a tough one. And I know I say a lot of these are tough ones ain’t hard to come up with ideas, but this one I think was one of the most challenging prompt combinations in quite a while. I was kind of excited for “Sushi” the most out of the two prompts. Sushi is cute. It can be cute. You can stylize it. It comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes and colors. Sushi can be a lot of fun.
That I wasn’t worried about. When it came to briar patch I was just- All I could think about was all these little squiggly lines and details I was going to have to draw and what wasn’t going to turn it into and I couldn’t come up with a good idea other than having just a briar patch sitting there. So I started stylizing the briar patch. Did I want someone eating near a briar patch?
“Hey look, it’s just a person eating some sushi next to a briar patch.” So then I started combining these words into creatures. Maybe we had a bird sushi? Or maybe a briar patch sushi? Which led me to a rose sushi and then I started to think about these creatures together. So I had this bird sushi with a soy sauce lake with one of those little soy sauce Fish sticking out of it and the briar patch could be made out of noodles. So the bowl was tipped over and they were pouring out. And as fun as this idea was and I was really trying to make it work I ended up sketching and penciling two of these versions and I just couldn’t come up with something that I liked. It just either wasn’t enough for me or just seemed like it was too I don’t know I just wasn’t feeling any of these ideas and I’m going to be rude and tease them in a blur for you guys, but I will be posting these on my patreon for them to see. It’s a secret between us. Okay, now that that shameless plug is aside, What I ended up going with is something a little different than my usual. If you saw my abstract video I am trying to think less literal these days and think a little bit more abstract, and even though I love the storytelling aspect of my art and I don’t think I can ditch that no matter how abstract I want to go. I tried to push myself to go a little bit more abstract, not super abstract as in crazy shapes, but just in the sense that the idea itself isn’t a solid literal easy to see idea of what’s happening. I just wanted to kind of put things together and try not to make them have to make sense even though in my brain I’m still like “Okay, but what’s happening here?” So it was starting off with a briar patch I really enjoy the way I stylize these. It ended up being a lot more fun and less scary than I expected. Drawing a lot of parallel lines can be very difficult and especially when they’re going in all different directions It can still be easy to make them look stupid. I guess it’s sort of like a organized mess… But they turned out really cute I think even the spikes I stylize two weird shapes and I actually really like the briar patch. So coming out of the briar patch We have a girl and I guess I kind of made her hair sort of anime inspired just in the sense that it is a little more shapely and less realistic than someone would have. Not that any of my art is realistic, but you know what I mean. And then where the sushi comes in I have this girl reaching out for all sorts of Japanese snacks and foods because as fun as sushi is there’s a lot of fun shapes and things happening in Japanese food lots of different colors and so I just wanted to include a lot of different snacks and foods other than sushi. So she’s reaching up and she’s grabbing a you see but there’s also noodles and Pocky. But the question is
“What is happening in this illustration?” Now, I know I said I was going to go a little bit more abstract because I want to try to go more abstract. Not all the time. Don’t worry. I’m not going to ditch my storytelling aspect of my illustrations. That is definitely something I love about my art. It’s just every once in a while I think it would be fun to come up with something that doesn’t have an apparent narrative. So when it came to this illustration I thought well I can color the briar patch a nice Dookie SAP green and make the girl pale with brown hair and color all the foods as they are but Because I was trying to go abstract and have this random girl in a briar patch reaching up to Japanese foods I thought when it came to coloring I wanted to do something that I don’t normally do. I wanted to do something abstract with coloring…? So at first I was just going to make everything very very bright and heavily saturated And then I thought as I was coloring the briar patch that it would actually be really fun to do more of a cyan Magenta yellow, of course with some green and purple in there because I mixed colors. And that way it would just make everything so obnoxiously colorful and bright and definitely not realistic and I guess I was just trying to go for a more dreamlike appearance for this illustration. I was trying to go a little more abstract but I couldn’t help but think what the story was here and all I could really come up with is that maybe this was a dream. So maybe this girl’s a weeb. She loves Japanese culture. She loves anime and video games and all that fun stuff and one day she dreams to go to Japan. And in her mind being in America or wherever she lives that isn’t Japan It’s like being stuck in a briar patch, and she’s reaching up to the heavens to where All of these Japanese snacks are and food, and she’s just thinking
“One day I’ll reach my dream of going to Japan.” Hey if you have a better idea for what is happening in this brightly colored and strange illustration Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear your guys’ interpretation of this one. But I think all I can manage is thinking maybe it’s a dream because what is happening here? Hey, this could also be a poster who said this illustration had to be something that was happening. This could be a poster, maybe a cover art for a book or a CD, or maybe it’s me just painting brightly-colored Japanese food and having a girl reach for them out of a briar patch. After I decided to color all the foods crazy colors, that didn’t make sense I kind of regretted coloring the briar patch of green because when you think of plants you think of green. But at the time when I was coloring the briar patch, I didn’t have the idea of coloring everything crazy colors, but that’s okay. I think the green is really fun. And I do enjoy a nice green. What can I say? And it even goes well with her hair. We’ve kind of got that red-green complementary color situation sort of happening. I don’t know. This was a strange one it was fun to just kind of do something random for once, but I think I really miss my storytelling. So maybe next time we’ll get a prompt where I can do that. And in case you are wondering why I didn’t include a mix of orange because I do have cyan magenta yellow purple and green but I didn’t include much I think I shaded the two sushis with orange and decided that it just wasn’t bright and vivid enough to be included. Which overall I didn’t shade a lot in this illustration just because I think It was going to bring down the brightness of these pieces and by pieces I mean pieces of food. I did shade a little bit with blue and purple but I was hesitant to use the orange because it just wasn’t Wasn’t this fun? So there’s a lack of shading and a lack of orange in this piece But I think overall the effect of the dreamlike whatever is happening is still there. So.. That’s why there’s no orange. Alright guys. I will see you at the end card to see what you did for last week’s prompts. [Music] Last week’s prompts were “Gargoyle” and “Diamond” and I had so much fun. You guys really interpreted these way differently than I did. Our first featured artist is @benroberry who created this really adorable and chunky and cute and round gargoyle. Look at him. I said gargoyles were ugly, but you guys really proved me wrong. He’s just sitting there cuddling his diamond. I could see this being in this storybook. It’s just so cute. I love this little guy. And next up we have @pabiaszek. I’m sorry. I really liked your interpretation of the diamond into the gargoyle. So instead of having an actual chunk of diamond that’s maybe being held by the gargoyle. We have a diamond that’s been incorporated into the statue as a tear. I thought that was so cool. I never thought about doing that sort of thing. And this is why I love having you guys join in too because your ideas are so unique and different than the way I think. So I really love that. He is crying a diamond. I mean that is very intense. I love it. Alright, that’s it Thank you guys so much for watching until the end and I will see you in the next video. Stay golden. Bye! [Music]
