Acrylic Paint vs Gel Polish
Hi everybody, I’m Kirsty Meakin from Naio Nails. In this video, we’re gonna do a Q&A. Adam: So on YouTube, Stacey Miley has asked, ”I probably asked this before… Kirsty: Stacey Miley?
Adam: Yeah! Kirsty: Oh no! I don’t know her. Adam: Such a fool****. I’ve probably asked this before but I don’t remember if it was ever answered, so I apologize in advance. Kirsty: Polite, very polite Adam: ”WHY (in capital letters) use acrylic paint instead of the same colours in nail polish?” Kirsty: 1. We don’t use nail polish on this channel
Adam: Get it right, Stacey! We use gel polish. If you mean gel polish, then I will show you the difference between gel polish and paint. Are you ready? Let’s get cracking with a knocking as Adam says. I’m just gonna paint this nail acrylic, just so we’ve got something to work on, so I can give you a better example. I want to explain in full and not, you know, half-heartedly. If you use series black, then yes, it’s super pigmented but you won’t get, this is probably the best polish, gel polish that you can use for painting but I will show you the difference between paint and polish. I’ll show you with the black, and then I’m going to show you with… pick a colour. Any colour. Adam: Red
Kirsty: Red? Okay Only need to put one coat of that on because we are just, you know, playing. I’m gonna put a coat of topcoat on there though because we do need that. Never use acrylic paint directly onto a sticky layer, it will not work. It won’t! It needs to be a smooth cured layer. It can be a buffed layer, that’s fine but the sticky layer and acrylic paint, do not mix. So, we have the nail, so I can show you the difference between. So, we’re gonna put a bit of black, This is black paint, acrylic paint. This is black gel polish. Do they look the same? You’d be forgiven for thinking they are the same even though, I was like “hmmm which one is which?” A paint, acrylic paint. Okay? I’ll show you the difference between acrylic paint. That’s acrylic paint. Just gonna do some… I don’t know, what do call this? We call this filigree. So it slides nicely, you can water it down to get super fine lines and it dries on its own. Now, let’s use series black and let’s see the difference. It’s raised for one, so it adds thickness. When you want to go super fine, it will go a little bit more transparent, it won’t sort of glide very easily. Let’s go back into the acrylic paint. You see the difference? One is slightly grayer. So, when you use gel, when it’s super fine line, it is slightly grayer. Okay, no getting wrong when you do it like this. When you’re doing, you know, nice bit of filigree, it’s absolutely amazing. It works fantabulous. It will be slightly raised to them. You can water down acrylic paints to make a wash. See? So, you can create that wash. And you just do that with water. You can do the same with gel, You’re going to mix it with the gel residue wipe off solution to get your wash. However, it’s stickier, so it wouldn’t sit into recesses. So by that I mean, if there is a dent, and you want the wash to sit into the dents, it won’t work with gel polish, it will with acrylic paint. It’s alright if you just doing a nice colour, and you want it to be transparent like that. That’s fair enough, and then, let’s do the red. the red paint. So, this question was asked when we were doing the dragon eyeball, Adam: Yeah.
Kirsty: Yeah? Kirsty: Why did I use acrylic paints and not gel? Because I wanted it to be really fine. I wanted it to have a little bit of wash as well. It’s gonna give you a crisper edge, if you use acrylic paints and now we’re going to do that, do the same with the red. So, this is gel polish. You can see that it goes from quite a deep red to more transparent when it gets finer. So, if we try to do some fine lines, it actually looks more pink. Which is fine, if that’s what you want. Yeah, let’s do it in the acrylic paint. plus this is not set yet and you’ve got to set it between as well, so there are advantages and disadvantages with both. So, you can see that this is flatter and it’s the same colour throughout. So from tip to edge, so, right from here to here, it’s the same colour. Let’s do some fine lines now. You can see that they’re actually the same colour, so they still keep the colour. The only problem with acrylic paints is it starts to dry as you use it, so you’ve got to keep dampening your brush. So you dampen your brush with water. So, can you see the difference there? All the red ones that we did where the acrylic paint are all red and the gel polish one, you get a difference in the color. Yes, it’s very red here, but as it comes to the edge, it’s more pink and the fine lines are definitely pink. I’d say that’s the kind of look you want. However, I think the black can be used just as well as the black paint. I’ll topcoat it so you can see the difference as well. Pop that in the lamp. Sometimes, I’m more comfortable using acrylic paint in situations. Sometimes, I’m more comfortable using gel polish and I’ll tell you why. You can’t marble with acrylic paints very well, but you can marble with gel polish absolutely amazingly well. Now, if you look at this, you can see here, it’s super flat, it doesn’t make any sort of bulkness. Is that even not weird to know it doesn’t bulk out the design whereas here, you can see where the light catches it, you have an uneven surface. See how it kind of protrudes out of the topcoat? There you are. I hope that explains in detail. I hope haven’t bored you. So there you are guys, I really hope that that’s helped you with anything, I hope it’s helped you with the questions, because you might have had the same questions because we’ve had those questions asked a lot. So, there we are! Don’t forget check us out on Facebook and Instagram and all that shebang and I’ll see you in the next video. Who knows? We could mention you, if it’s a Q&A again. Bye bye! Hmm, that’s it, can’t talk.

Thank you for making this video. I have been wondering the same and it has been bugging me a lot. If you don’t mind, could you do a video about free hand brush strokes and how to utilize them?
Hi the audio is off Christie talking ahead of the video lol but still a good video thanks for sharing 💅❤️❣️💅😀have a great day
great vid!
Thank you very nice your video.
As always love you videos 😊 can you please explain the difference between gel polish and gel paint?
Great Informations
BLESS!!! I need that dusty rose gel polish in my life! I haven't been able to spot it on the website since Kirsty had it on her nails WEEKS ago! (Y'all need a sort by color feature for your polishes…would make it MUCH easier to find what colors we like/need and want to compare).
Going to double comment here because I've done designs in gel polish and you have to be SO careful Bc the gel polish tends to slide and will spread out if you're not quick and then the design can get muddy. Acrylic has better staying power and it doesn't move on the nail.
Can I ask how long it takes to dry x
What number is that brush you working with?
Which number or name is the red gelpolish ?
Just been watching you when you were a lot younger doing one stroke on essential nails 😊 were awesome even then!
I absolutely love acrylic paint as a medium for so many projects. But I've yet to do anything with nails. I used it in my leather work, i did a lot of cartoon, comic book and pop culture images tooled into leather and it was easy enough to get many levels of thinner work the acrylic by just adding water, and the colors stay solid even as the moisture was absorbed into the leather. I've been wondering as I'm picking up using acrylic as a medium for projects if i need to buy gel polish, if I'm not doing nails… It's nice to know though how raised vs flat and solid vs faded they both look 😊
Thank you!
💞❤️💕
Why don't you use nail polish? I love how you do nails. To me you are one of the best nail teacher Iook at.Thank you so much!!!!
Can you stamp with acrylic paints. Please make a video showing the difference
Use a wet palet for acrylic paint
It can last a whole working day in a tin 😀
The red acrylic paint looks more orange.
Dear Christie,That's all very true, everything you said BUT I kinda waited for you to state THE DIFFERENCE between gel polish and acrylic paints, that being that when you have a design with too much detail one overlapping the other, acrylic paint stays where it is but gel polish tends to unite,as we know gel goes to where gel is so it doesn't leave lines and blah blah etc, which is good when you paint a plain colour but for details it kinda ruins the whole thing,,anyway I love your videos and all, just wanted to express my thoughts,,
Hello Kirsty can you do a tutorial with a calligraphy pen for nail art please ???
I have a question about something else, when I use acrylic paint to do nail art and then topcoat the paint seems to dissolve after a few days. It just vanishes, even if I topcoat it twice and let it dry for about 5 – 10 minutes. Why does this happen?
Okay, woman! How in the HE'LL did you do those grapes that she in the music intro? It's been driving me nuts since I first subscribed!
P.s. my sister and I are Naio Nails addicts. You are very funny AND explanatory. Thanks for that
